Focus on Singapore's Cinema

In the presence of Doris Young (actress of They Call her Cleopatra Wong and star of the 70s), Tony Yeow (director of the censured Ring of Fury), Royston Tan (director of the controversial 15, whose new film is promised to the Berlin Film Festival), Jennifer Lew (film student at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic) and Kampira Dowsuparoj (coordinator at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic). Moderator: Raphaël Millet, film critic and specialist in Singaporean cinema, cofounder of the Southeast Asia Cinematheque based in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Four million inhabitants, a high concentration of multinational companies and banks, four official languages, a multiethnic and cosmopolitan population, a cleanliness that is almost maniacal… Singapore and Switzerland have a lot in common. However, Singapore seems to have made it in the film industry whereas Switzerland struggles to establish itself in that field. What reasons ensured this small state to rebuild a film industry that had all but disappeared in the 1980s? What esthetic and cultural influences make these films so inventive? What future can be imagined for this cinema? These questions will be addressed in these informal talks, in which the public will be able to meet with some of the main protagonists of Singapore's film industry.

Round Tables : South Africa, what future is there for today's youth?

!! Round table in English following the screening of Wa'n Wina in original version with English subtitles!!

In the presence of Angela Mai (co-director of Memories of Rain), Dumisani Phakathi (director of Wa'n Wina), Xoliswa Sithole (Producer of Shouting Silent), Gerhard Pfister (Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC). Moderator: Caroline Dommen (Jurist, Rights of the Individual) (to be confirmed)
Confronted with a heavy past and an uncertain future, South Africa's youth adopts a paradoxical attitude. Both eager to obtain filial recognition and curious about their family rituals and traditions, they nonetheless break away from any political discourse and protects themselves from the heavy expectations of parents and grandparents. Furthermore, the youth of a dream South Africa is confronted to a drama that disrupts any prospect of a future: AIDS. "I was told that one person out of two from my generation will contract the virus before the age of 30", says Dumisani Phakathi in substance.

Between a generational divide and the attempts to construct a new identity, what future is there for young parents and their children?
